The New York Islanders traveled to Philadelphia to play their most important game of the season. They needed to win in order to keep pace in the playoff race and hold off the Flyers. To put it simply the Isles laid an egg in the game.

Puck drop for Thursday’s game was at 7:08 and by 8:00 the game was all but decided. Dale Weise scored at 4:30 of the first period to put the Flyers on the board. The first period would see four more goals, and they would all be scored by a Flyer.

The Islanders were playing in the most important game of the year, and at the end of the first period they were losing 5-0. The Islanders were able to make the game look respectable. The final score was 6-3 Flyers, and included an empty net goal.

Losing this game practically puts an end to the Islanders’ playoff hopes. They now have six games left and sit six points behind the Boston Bruins for the last wild card spot. They would now also have to jump Tampa Bay and Carolina in the standings.

The Islanders are on a three game losing streak, and could not have picked a worst time for it. Best case scenario would be the Islanders win out and finish the season with 94 points. Unfortunately, this may not be enough to get into the playoffs.

The Islanders had to play out of their mind to make it back into the playoff conversation after Jack Capuano was fired. Doug Weight had the team playing really well for a long time. Whether it be lack of talent, or just running out of fumes the Islanders have not looked like a good team recently. For the Islanders it was a tale of two seasons, and it appears the poor beginning was just too much to overcome.
